What Exactly is Obesity?
What Exactly is Obesity?
Obesity is a condition in which excess body fat builds up to a level that harms health. In this video, Dr. Vikram Lotwala, bariatric surgeon in Surat, explains what obesity actually is, why it is more than just being overweight, and the dangers of belly fat in particular.
Not all fat is the same
- Fat under the skin (subcutaneous fat) is spread around the body, such as on the hips and thighs.
- Fat around the organs (visceral or belly fat) collects deep inside the abdomen, around the liver and intestines.
- Belly fat is the more harmful type, as it is closely linked to diabetes, heart disease and fatty liver.
The dangers of belly fat for Indians
Many Indians store fat around the abdomen even when their overall weight looks normal. This is why waist size is an important check alongside BMI. A waist measurement of 90 cm or more in men and 80 cm or more in women is considered a health risk for South Asians. Understanding the dangers of belly fat helps people act early, even before they look overweight.
Health problems linked to obesity
Obesity raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, fatty liver, joint pain, infertility and some cancers. Treating obesity early can prevent or improve many of these conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I be obese if my weight looks normal?
Yes. Excess belly fat can be present even in people with a normal BMI, which is why waist size is also checked.
What is the difference between overweight and obese?
Both mean carrying more weight than is healthy, but obesity is the more severe stage. Under Indian guidelines, a BMI of 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese.
How do I measure my waist correctly?
Stand straight and breathe out normally. Place a measuring tape around your bare waist, midway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, roughly at the level of the belly button. Keep the tape snug but not tight.
Can I lose belly fat with stomach exercises alone?
No. Exercises like crunches strengthen the muscles but do not burn fat from one specific area. Belly fat reduces with overall weight loss through diet, regular physical activity and, where needed, medical treatment.
Can obesity affect fertility?
Yes. Obesity can disturb hormone levels and is linked to irregular periods and PCOS in women and lower sperm quality in men. Weight loss often improves fertility.
